DETROIT (WXYZ) – More parking meters are scheduled to go up in Greektown this year. The meters are spray painted by popular artist Shades and are going to be used to collect donations to help the homeless.

These meters are part of the Detroit Donates program created by the Greektown Preservation Society, Downtown Detroit Partnership and councilwoman Mary Sheffield’s homeless task force.

The meters can hold up to $200 so Detroit Donates is hoping individuals or businesses will sponsor a meter. They can be hand-painted by Shades with whatever design you want. Prices start at $1,500.

“We just want to have the meters out as a symbol of the actual program but we know all the actual funds won’t necessarily come from the actual meters,” says Sheffield.

If you are interested in sponsoring a meter, you can contact Paris Blessman, Office of Council Member Mary Sheffield, at (313) 224 – 4505 or Tom Paparaptis at apapas@greektowndetroit.org.
